Seeking knowledge is the greatest act of worship, behind jihād, and in some cases equal or better. Through knowledge, a person learns how to worship and know his Lord properly and correctly, along with the rulings he needs in his daily life.

The purpose of knowledge is not argument, pride, or showing off. Rather, its purpose is to know the truth, remove ignorance from ourselves, correct our actions, improve our character, benefit others, and draw closer to Allāh.

For this reason, every Muslim should begin by learning the knowledge that is personally required from him, as this is farḍ ʿayn (personal obligation). This includes the basic rulings of worship, basic beliefs regarding Allāh, and similar matters that a Muslim personally needs to know.

The student should regularly correct his intention. He should seek knowledge for the sake of Allāh, to remove ignorance from himself, to understand the truth correctly, to correct his actions, and to benefit others.

Knowledge should not be sought for argumentation, disputes, showing off, pride, or defeating others in debates. The student should be careful not to make knowledge a path to arrogance or unnecessary debate. Rather, he should seek it with humility, sincerity, and the desire to act upon what he learns.

The student should also have good manners with knowledge. He should be humble, patient, consistent, and willing to revise and put in effort. He should not become arrogant over what he learns, nor look down on others.

Knowledge is a blessing from Allāh. The more a person learns about Allāh and His religion, the more he should realise his own need, weakness, and dependence upon Allāh.
